What is a Moon Moment?

A Moon Moment is Beyond the Moon’s heart. Not a luxury, but a necessary breathing space for families with a sick child. An investment in well-being, resilience, and connection.

The intensive care for a seriously ill child often forces parents to reduce or even temporarily suspend their professional activity, while costs continue to scale. What is taken for granted by many often becomes unattainable for these families: togetherness. During a Moon Moment, hospitals, treatments, and worries fade into the background for a moment. Rest, reconnection and precious time as a family take over.

All year round, we offer families with a seriously ill child a fully carefree Moon Moment, personalised to the sick child and family. We start from needs, not from availability. From transportation to accommodation and meals, from medical support to the smallest details: everything is taken care of. Every Moon Moment is unique, but the feeling is always the same: simply being a family again.

The journey to a Moon Moment

After medical approval, we develop a customised path for each family. We match based on family needs, not on availability. Privacy and trust are paramount: all information is treated with the strictest confidentiality.

Every Moon Family follows a caring trail from application to complete unburdening. Beyond the Moon organises everything from A to Z, so that families can take a break and enjoy togetherness time again.

Afterwards — respecting their privacy — the family shares a testimonial of thanks to the supporter that made this Moon Moment possible. Sharing these Moon Families heartwarming stories is essential to the continued existence and growth of Beyond the Moon.

Frequently asked questions

That varies from family to family. Every request is carefully reviewed in consultation with healthcare professionals. We only schedule the Moon Moment after a written medical authorisation is given and when everything can be practically and safely arranged. Usually, the lead time is between approximately 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes longer. In urgent or palliative situations, we can purposely shorten this period, where possible. This depends, among others, on the child’s health condition and treatments, availability at our vacation partners, and any possible additional medical or practical needs. We always take the necessary time to ensure that every Moon Moment is feasible, safe, and truly stress-free.

A Moon Moment is completely cost- and carefree for the family. Beyond the Moon takes care of everything from start to finish. We only request a limited administrative follow-up to organise the stay, and a testimonial about their experience after their Moon Moment. This feedback is essential to strengthen our work and show supporters the difference their support makes. The family testimonials are vital for the continued existence and growth of Beyond the Moon. This allows the family to focus entirely on what really matters: rest and togetherness time.

Each Moon Moment is worked out in close consultation with the family and the attending physician. We listen to the needs and possibilities of the sick child and the family. We then look for the best possible match within our network of regular holiday partners. This creates a safe and caring Moon Moment providing the family with breathing space and togetherness time again.

Because we work with limited resources and want to offer as many families as possible a breathing space, we give every family one Moon Moment. This is how we equally split our care and solidarity.
Our goal is to bestow each year 52 families with a carefree Moon Moment — one per week. The more financial strength we build up together, the more families we can gift with rest and new resilience. For each family, that one moment is a unique ray of light enabling them to move forward.
