3D Murals to dream away with...

During the Covid period (2020-2022), Beyond the Moon was temporarily unable to organise ‘Moon Moments’ for families with a sick child, as travel and stays were either impossible or severely restricted. To still offer families and children in hospitals a moment of relaxation and imagination, an alternative initiative was developed during that period: an interactive 3D mural project in children’s hospitals. These colorful and playful murals brought a touch of fantasy and adventure to the hospital environment, giving children the chance to briefly escape their medical reality. While this project is no longer being implemented today, the results continue to provide distraction and joy and can be found at:

How did your child experience the murals?

We are curious to hear from you!

"We find this mural very beautiful, funny, playful, and colorful for a hospital room." Two very happy children who are enjoying it immensely 😉

"The fact that this is a Beyond the Moon project immediately brought us back to the wonderful memories of our vacation in Disneyland Paris in 2012, which we experienced thanks to them." Father of Aert, 15 years old

"This was the first thing we saw when we entered the room. We think it is very beautiful and makes the room feel less cold. A very lovely eye-catcher!" Mother of Xyana, 5 years old

"Our two children have to be on an IV every three weeks and always look forward to seeing which animals are painted on the wall of their room. They look at the beautiful murals with great admiration." Father of two children

"Beautiful and soothing. Without that wonderful mural, the Grimm brothers' fairy tale would never have come up during our hospital stay." Mother of Yinaël, 7 years old and Charlize, 4 years old

"We had to celebrate his birthday in the hospital, but we did dance together with these fun frogs." Pieter, 8 years old

"They soften the pain and bring color in these times of much misery. It is heartening to see your child smile because of it." Mother of Lobke, 11 years old

"They bring color and life to the rooms and break the monotony of the long days in the hospital." Mother of Thijme, 12 years old (in memoriam)

"This mural in the small isolation room made us very happy. It feels like we are looking outside at a beautiful landscape." Mother of Mathebula, 9 years old

"It makes the white rooms a bit more pleasant and is a good distraction for children who find a hospital environment rather scary." Mother of Tibo, 11 years old

"He entered his room with a smile and immediately recognised the baby ducks. He pointed at them and instantly imitated their sounds, which spontaneously brought a smile to his face." Mother and father of little Ioannis

"We could look at the mural together, count the climbing snails, and tell lovely stories about it. It's always nice to have a little distraction in the hospital." Mother of Lies, 14 years old

"Distraction makes the stay more pleasant for many children: it reduces pain stimuli, relaxes them, and facilitates treatment."

"Children have a vivid imagination and can become absorbed in their own wonderful world. Thanks to that creativity and empathy, children feel more at ease and find peace. In collaboration with and thanks to Beyond the Moon, we want to encourage this with these beautiful interactive 3D murals. The peace and sense of security contribute to the mental well-being and healing of our patients. And besides, they are also just very beautiful for parents and staff. In short, a great project and joy for patients and the team at work!"

"In the Center for Neurophysiological Monitoring, children and young people come daily for long-term EEG or sleep studies. The children's rooms absolutely benefited from a child-friendly makeover. Beyond the Moon's 3D murals provide a sense of security and recognition, reducing feelings of anxiety in children staying there. The fun animals provide a good distraction while applying the electrodes needed for the study."

"A warm care environment tailored to children is very important for our children's hospital. This project by Beyond the Moon is a particularly beautiful initiative that gives me a very warm feeling."

“A hospital admission or visit is not pleasant for many children. Distraction makes the stay more pleasant for them: it reduces pain stimuli, relaxes them, and facilitates treatment. It was a logical step to apply this project in our large waiting room just before the operating theater, where children often wait their turn with some stress. These murals bring a positive atmosphere. They are for all ages and so realistic that the children not only analyze them enthusiastically but also want to grab the depicted animal or object."
